Lower Priced Kindle 3 Covers & Jackets   no comments

I need a cover for my Kindle 3, and I’ve been waiting for more covers to hit the market as nothing has really grabbed me yet.  I really like the Cole Haan covers, especially the woven leather model, and seriously considered buying one for my Kindle 3.  But I hesitated at spending almost as much again for the cover as my Kindle 3 Wi-Fi ereader cost — at least until more case makers get their Kindle 3 covers and jackets out.

I have an Octovo Vintage Leather cover for my Kindle DXG (review), and really like it — as does most everyone who sees it.  I’ve been waiting for OCTOVO to launch their covers for the Kindle 3, but so far they are still “coming soon.”  Summer is long gone and my Kindle 3 cannot continue to wander around naked — even if this is Southern California.

UPDATE: OCTOVO has finally released their Kindle 3  covers.

BoxWave Sienna Leather Elite Kindle 3 Case

Amazon has a page with covers and cases for the Kindle 3from some of the more popular manufacturers, not all of which are expensive.  What I’m focusing on here are covers from what are perhaps less well-known makers.

For now I bought the Sienna Leather Kindle 3 cover from BoxWave.  This one is very reasonably priced at $23.  This cover gets quite good reviews for the Kindle 2 and Nook models.

This case is a faux leather that looks BoxWave-Sienna-Leather-Kindle-3-Cover realistic enough unless next to real leather (if you want real leather I would recommend the J-Tech covers below in this price range).  It looks something like a vintage saddle brown leather.  The lining is a charcoal grey microsuade that looks quite nice with the graphite case of my Kindle 3.

To protect the screen there are reinforcing plates sewn inside both the front and rear covers.  The Kindle is held in place by elastic corner bands and a magnetic snap is used to hold the cover closed.  With the cover on my Kindle 3 Wi-Fi weighs in at 14 ounces — the cover itself is about 5.5 ounces.

One thing that is different about the BoxWave cover is that the fastening strap is attached to the front and snaps on the back panel.  Most ereader covers I have seen seem to have the strap sewn onto the back and fastening in the front.

It took me awhile to get used to this, as it seems like you are holding the ereader backwards.  Actually, though, BoxWave-Sienna-Leather-Kindle-3-Cover putting the strap on the front solves one sometimes annoying problem with some ereader covers:  in some covers the strap, especially when the cover is new and the material stiff, curls over the ereader and onto the screen.  This is distracting and requires tucking or holding the strap back.

The Sienna Leather Kindle 3 cover is practical and functional. It should serve well to protect your ereader.  BoxWave also makes a similar cover in real black leather for the same price.

TrendyDigital Folio Case for Kindle 3

TrendyDigital-Folio-Case-for-Kindle-3 TrendyDigital’s Folio Case has pockets for papers and business cards as well as a pen holder.  This case uses elastic corner straps to hold the Kindle 3 in place.

Double zippers are used to close the Folio case.  This type of closure can help to prevent dust and splashes from reaching your Kindle 3.  The Folio Case is made of faux leather and costs $25.  TrendyDigital also makes this cover with a world map print on the outside.

TrendyDigital also makes its waterproof covers for the Kindle 3.

J-Tech Digital Leather Kindle 3 Covers

J-Tech Digital makes a series of genuine leather covers for the Kindle 3. J-Tech-Digital-Leather-Kindle-3-Cover These cases also use elastic corner straps to hold your ereader in place.  A magnetic snap on the flap is used to hold the cover closed.  Pen holders and slots for business cards and papers are built-in.

J-Tech currently makes several colors of leather covers for the Kindle 3:  brown, dark grey, pink and purple.  All are priced at $30.

Incipio Tech. Kindle 3 Leather Sleeve

One of the great things about the Kindle 3 is its light weight.  No matter which cover you get, you are adding weight to your ereader.  There is something to be said for a sleeve design to protect your Kindle 3.  Incipio-Kindle-3-Leather-Sleeve This style of case affords protection for your ereader when not being used or during transport, but when you are ready to use it you just remove your Kindle and read it au naturel.

Incipio’s sleeve for the Kindle 3 is a simple and elegant envelope-like design.  Available in brown, this case runs $25.

Other Kindle 3 Covers

Another manufacturer of covers for the Kindle 3 worth checking out is rooCase. It has a number of different designs and styles, and while the Kindle 3 has not been out long, this company is getting good customer reviews on its Kindle 3 covers already.

Duragadgetalso makes a case in several colors for the Kindle 3 that integrates a stand and comes with a car charger for $20.  This company also has a few zip cases available.

Eco-nique makes a Kindle 3 cover covered in hemp fabric for something a little different.  Besides the normal book style cover this one is also available in a flip top design.  This cover is a bit more expensive at $40.

Whichever case or cover you choose for your Kindle 3 ereader, do make sure that it is indeed for the Kindle 3.  Amazon’s search results tend to mix covers from all of the different Kindle models.  Make sure the description says “Kindle 3,” “Latest Generation,” “ 3rd Generation” or “Kindle Wi-Fi,” etc.

More Kindle & nook Covers, Cases & Jackets   no comments

Posted at 9:43 pm in eReader Covers, Cases & Jackets

If you have a nook or Kindle ereader there really are a lot of covers and cases to choose from now.  Besides protecting your ereader, finding the right cover is a great way to personalize your reading.

Splash Proof Kindle Case

If you are looking for water and sand resistance but don’t need a full-on waterKlearKase-Splash-Proof-Kindle2-Case proof case for your Kindle 2 ereader then the new KlearKase is worth looking at.  The KlearKase is made of polycarbonate and is splash and dust proof and also protects against bumps, scratches and drops.  This case is designed to be left on your Kindle all of the time – not just when you are reading around the wet stuff.

The KlearKase is not meant to be used if you actually take your Kindle into the water; it would be great for use poolside, while the M-Edge Guardian Casewould be the appropriate choice for actually taking your ereader with you into the pool.  Currently the KlearKaseis only available for the 6-inch Kindle and costs $39.99.  This is half of the price of the Guardian case if you don’t need the heavy duty waterproofing the M-Edge product provides.

Since this case is clear, you could also use a skin on your Kindle to personalize it.  For other waterproof ereader covers and cases see my previous post.

JAVOedge nook Covers & Cases

JAVOedge makes a lot of different cases and covers for the nook. JAVOedge-Poppy-Sleeve-nook-eReader-CoverThese come in many styles, but there are a variety of floral prints on canvas or other fabric.  Many of the JAVOedge ereader cases are available in either a book style or flip style and there are also sleeve style cases as shown in the picture.  Prices are reasonable – mostly ranging from $20 to $40.

Moleskine Kindle Cover

The Moleskine cover is available for both the 6-inch Kindle and the Kindle DX ereaders.  It is slim and elegant.  The interior is lined with microsuade and four wide elastic bands are use to hold the Kindle in place.  The Moleskine cover comes with a reporter-style notebook for note taking.  The model for the 6-inch Kindleis $39.99 and the DX sizeis $59.99.

OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 & Kindle DX Cover

This is one of my favorites – I love old leather. OCTOVO-Vintage-Leather-Kindle-Cover The OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle Caseis lined with microsuade and uses the Kindle hinge plus an elastic band at one corner to hold the ereader securely in place.

With this type of rustic leather each cover will take on its own unique appearance over time.  The craftsmanship of these covers is high, and they are somewhat more expensive;   $74.99 for the 6-inch Kindle size and $84.99 for the DX size.

Amazon for some reason does not have the Vintage Leather Case for the Kindle DX lately, but you can order it direct from Octovo. icon

M-Edge Waterproof Guardian Kindle Case Surfaces   no comments

I’ve written before about the waterproof Guardian case for the 6-inch Kindle from M-Edge.  M-Edge had a Kindle in one of these suspended in a small tank of water at their booth at CES.  This is serious waterproofing for your Kindle – great for boating, etc., and will protect your Kindle ereader up to a depth of one meter.

M-Edge had promised the Guardian case would ship in the spring,  and I received an email from them today proclaiming its arrival.  The waterproof Guardian Kindle Case with a choice of red, blue or black back cover is now available for $79.99.

Cooking With the Kindle   no comments

Posted at 9:02 am in eBook Stores, kindle 2,Random

The Kindle Store now has over 450,000 titles.  Amazon seems to be adding somewhere around 10,000 titles per month.  And as Amazon points out in their press release today there are also 1.8 million public domain titles available online for free for the Kindle (and other) ereaders.

Today Amazon announced the addition of several popular cookbooks.  From the press release:

"Customers tell us they love to cook from recipes on their Kindles," said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President, Kindle Content. "Kindle for iPhone or Kindle for BlackBerry is a great way to keep ingredients lists with you when you go to the grocery store, and then pick up right at that recipe on your Kindle when you’re ready to cook. In the kitchen, Kindle doesn’t have pages that may close while you’re trying to reference a recipe. We hope that our customers who cook will take advantage of some of these great Kindle books."

The Kindle Store has thousands of great books for cooks. Some of the new and most popular books include:

  • "How to Cook Everything, Completely Revised 10th Anniversary Edition: 2,000 Simple Recipes for Great Food" by Mark Bittman, published by Wiley
  • "Rose’s Heavenly Cakes" by Rose Levy Berenbaum, published by Wiley
  • "Kneadlessly Simple: Fabulous, Fuss-Free, No Knead Breads" by Nancy Baggett, published by Wiley
  • "So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week" by Ellie Krieger, published by Wiley
  • "The Best Recipes in the World" by Mark Bittman, published by Broadway
  • "Julia’s Kitchen Wisdom: Essential Techniques and Recipes From a Lifetime of Cooking" by Julia Child, published by Knopf

Indeed, a search for cookbooks in the Kindle Storecomes up with over 1500 results.

The kitchen is one place that I can really see an ereader stand for your Kindle coming in handy.  The M-Edge FlexStand looks like one of the best and most versatile.  A waterproof ereader casewould probably be a good idea as well.

Waterproof Kindle Covers and Cases   no comments

Note: This article is about Kindle 2 waterproof covers.    Please see my post on Kindle 3 waterproof and water resistant covers if that is what you are looking for.

Guardian eReader Case by M-Edge

If you want to take a bath with your Kindle ereader,  you can of course do like Jeff Bezos and use a large ziploc bag.  But now ereaders in the know have something much more cool to brave the waters in.

M-Edge, which is probably the largest manufacturer of ereader covers and cases, had a new waterproof Kindle case on display at CES.

The Guardian eReader Case is made of hard transparent polycarbonate with an anti-reflective film to cut glare while reading in sunlight.  FourM-Edge-Guardian-Waterproof-Kindle-Case latches keep the case tightly closed and an integrated gasket keeps the water out in depths of up to one meter.  There are flexible sealed coverings over the buttons to allow full access to the keyboard and controls.

Internal buoyancy chambers keep the Guardian floating upright. If your ereader goes overboard while wearing the Guardian it will simply bob back up to the surface of the water in a ready to read position and you will still be smiling.  In fact, this case is almost like a Coast Guard approved life vest for Kindle ereaders.  Holy Kindle on a jet ski!  Kindle ereaders can now go boating!

In the tub you could just let your Kindle float in front of you,  leaving your hands free for a quick round of Battleship vs Mega Antimatter-Breath Giant Mutant Rubber Ducky from Tokyo Harbor between page turns.

The Guardian is now availablewith the back colored in red, blue or black and is priced at $79.99.

M-Edge-Leisure-Kindle-Jacket Update: M-Edge also has another water and sand resistant cover  – the M-Edge Leisure Kindle Jacket, which has a clear vinyl cover and ripstop nylon back.  Access to the five way controller is available through a Lycra panel.  A high-density foam frame provides shock protection, and you can turn your Kindle ereader face down when transporting for better screen protection.  Priced at $29.99

TrendyDigital WaterGuard Waterproof Case

For a less expensive albeit less protective solution,  you could go with one of TrendyDigital’s WaterGuard Waterproofcases.  These have been around forTrendyDigital-WaterGuard-Waterproof-Kindle-Case awhile,  and are kind of like a high tech Ziploc bag.  The controls are accessed through the flexible cover.  TrendyDigital makes these cases in several sizes. There are WaterGuard Cases that will work with several ereaders, including the nook, Sony Touch or Pocket Edition and the Kindle DX.

At CES I had a chance to look at some of TrendyDigital’s leather Kindle covers as well.  These are somewhat unique in that instead of using the usual hinge, Velcro or elastic corner bands to secure your ereader in the TrendyDigital-MaxGuard-Plus-Kindle-Cover cover,  TrendyDigital uses a leather pocket that is closed on all of the outer edges.  There are cutouts for buttons, USB ports, etc.  Besides securely holding your Kindle in place, this has the added benefit of increased shock protection,  especially at the corners.   These covers use magnetic closures.

TrendyDigital’s leather covers are also available for the nook and Kindle DX ereaders.

Patagonia and Belkin Covers

The Patagonia Kindle Case is a water resistant cover made of polyester and has a plastic zipper.  This cover uses elastic corner bands to hold your ereader in place.  There is a Patagonia case for the Kindle DX ereader as well as for the six-inch Kindle.  These cases tend to get mixed reviews (3 1/2 stars/176 reviews).

The Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case is really more of a carrying bag than a cover, as you are meant to remove your Kindle for reading.  It is made of neoprene and has a plastic zipper.  Again, this one is water resistant, not water proof.  There is a size for the Kindle DX as well.  This case gets quite good reviews (4 1/2 stars/389 reviews).  One of my friends and his wife both have their Kindle ereaders happily ensconced in these cases and are quite satisfied.
