AT&T adds new postpaid data plan options for tablets   no comments

Posted at 8:21 am in Random

AT&T has announced a new postpaid data plan for tablets that will be added to the company’s existing monthly service plan options.  Like the existing prepaid plans, the new offering is month-to-month with no long-term contract.  It does offer the convenience of being billed for the service rather than being charged up-front to your credit card.

"Tablets offer the convenience of mobile broadband virtually anywhere and our new billing options give customers the flexibility to choose how they prefer to be billed," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets.

For a limited time AT&T is offering the first month free to customers who activate a new 2GB postpaid plan.

AT&T now offers the following data plans for tablets:

  • Postpaid:  $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment will be charged $10 per 1 GB of overage. Charges will appear on customers’ monthly wireless statements.
  • Prepaid:  $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment may choose to purchase an additional 2 GB for $25. Charges will appear on customers’ credit card statements.

The postpaid plan automatically renews every 30 days unless cancelled.

eLocity announces 10-inch tablets   no comments

Posted at 8:03 am in Random,Tablets

Stream TV Networks announced today that it will be launching a line of 10-inch tablets to join the company’s current 7-inch model, the eLocity A7.  Stream TV appears to have plans to launch seven different 10-inch models, which seems rather ambitious to say the least.

The new A10 tablets will be powered by Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and will feature the Tegra 2 chipset from NVIDIA.  Stream TV says that the screen resolution will be the highest in the mobile tablet category.

The announcement also says that the production targets for the A7 tablet were increased to meet demand.  I have the eLocity A7 7-inch tablet and it is quite good — I’m just finishing up my review.

New Notion Ink Adam Videos   1 comment

Posted at 12:33 pm in Pixel Qi,Random,Tablets

In an effort to allay the suspicions of the doubters out there Notion Ink has released a couple of new videos of the Adam tablet and its Eden interface.  More videos are promised to be forthcoming.  Probably in order to add to the veracity of the videos no editing has been done, so they may seem a bit rough:

The Pixel Qi version of the Adam is still sold out, and the backlit LCD versions are now shown as shipping in Feb. or March of 2011.   Mary Lou Jepsen writes in the Pixel Qi blog that we can, “Rest assured Notion Ink is ordering a lot more screens from us!”

Rohan Shravan, CEO of Notion Ink, has answered a number of answers to questions submitted by readers over at Android Police.  This is worth a read if you are interested in the Adam.  The video below is one Rohan sent to Android Police:

IT Var News is reporting that it was told by a Notion Inks spokesperson that the company is planning to sell the Adam through regular retail channels and that when enough units are sold in a given region service centers will be set up there.

In the Android Police interview Rohan says that retail partnerships have been made in the US, UK and Europe; a press release will be forthcoming, “as soon as products are ready with them.”  Being able to order the Adam from some place like Amazon would feel a lot more secure to many potential customers here than having to order direct from India.

Kno tablets get price tags   no comments

Kno has released the prices on its 14-inch tablets and, like the tablets themselves, the price tags are sizeable.   Kno claims that if you do the math, the average student can pay for the Kno and save another $1300 by using it to study digital textbooks rather than using printed textbooks.

There are currently four configurations listed:

  • Single screen 16GB — $599
  • Single screen 32GB — $699
  • Dual screen 16GB —  $899
  • Dual screen 32GB — $999

Kno-dual-screen-tabletActually, the prices are not that much different than the iPad, if you consider the size of the screen.   Of course the Kno doesn’t have the Apple App Store behind it; instead it is relying on the developer community to come forward and make apps for it.  How successful that will be no doubt depends on how many of the tablets are sold.  The Kno is designed primarily for students to study digital textbooks on, and it does appear to come with a nice suite of study tools.

Some of the specs:

  • Single or dual 14.1-inch LED multitouch display.
  • Weight:  Single screen 2.6 lbs; dual screen 5.6 lbs.
  • Size:  Single screen 13.8 x 9.1 x .55 inches; dual screen 13.8 x 18.3 x 1.14 inches.
  • Nvidia Tegra T200 CPU; CPU speed up to 1GHz.
  • 512 MB internal memory.
  • Micro USB; microphone with noise cancellation (feature to be added with a future software update); 3.5mm stereo headphone jack.
  • Battery life up to six hours.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Accelerometer and ambient light sensor.
  • Flash support.
  • Audio and video playback supporting common formats will be added with a software update after the tablet’s release.

Kno expects to start shipping on Dec 20, 2010.

Fable – A tablet and ereader for children   2 comments

Posted at 11:26 am in eBooks for Children,Random,Tablets

Isabella Products has announced Fable — a new tablet designed for children that will feature reading, drawing, gaming and sharing over mobile broadband.  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is partnering with Isabella to provide content, and the Fable will come pre-loaded with some well-known children’s material from the publisher.

Fable’s easy-to-use interface, coupled with a secure connection to Isabella’s VizitMe.com content management system, Fable-childrens-tablet-ereader enables children to interact with educational and entertaining content at home, school or on-the-go. Fable’s core applications include reading, drawing, gaming and photo sharing. Fable will ship with selected content from HMH’s treasured storybook collection. The e-Reader application will provide access to the Fable library, which includes a child’s personal collection of preloaded and purchased material available for immediate viewing. Parents and children will be able to purchase additional eBooks from Isabella’s VizitMe bookstore or directly from the bookstore located on the Fable device. With a wide selection of picture books and interactive content, Fable provides an entertaining digital experience for children of all ages and interests.

In addition to the e-Reader application, Fable offers:

  • Drawing – Includes an artistic toolset of various sizes and colors including markers, paintbrushes, magic pens or shapes, which can be applied to a blank page, coloring book pages or photos.
  • Gaming – Provides interactive games focusing on counting, reading, nutrition, colors, shapes and other educational themes, all supported by HMH and other publishers’ unique characters and stories.
  • Photo Sharing – Supports the delivery of photos from family and friends to Fable’s own Gallery. An onboard camera will also allow users to take photos from Fable and share them as well. Photos can also be used as coloring sheets in the drawing application.

To ensure a secure and safe experience, Fable is managed by Isabella’s VizitMe.com content management system that controls the device’s access to new content, friends and family, and the VizitMe bookstore. Fable’s settings can be adjusted on the device by parents through a pin code or can be remotely managed through a password-protected account at VizitMe.com. All purchased and created content is saved on VizitMe.com where parents can also invite and manage their friends’ and family’s interactions with the child’s device.

Powered by a mobile broadband connection, families will be able to take their child’s Fable with them almost anywhere—as a fun interactive and entertaining tool in the car, at a sibling’s soccer game or on the school bus. Fable’s durable design takes into consideration a child’s handling of the device and external factors within various environments. For more information about Fable, please go to www.isabellaproducts.com.

The Fable tablet is expected to be released in the middle of 2011.  Pricing and specs TBA.

RIM BlackPad Rumors   no comments

Posted at 7:47 am in Random,Tablets

The WSJ has been told by its sources that Research in Motion may reveal its new tablet next week at a developer’s conference in San Francisco.

The new tablet, often referred to as the BlackPad, will feature a 7-inch screen.  It will only be able to connect to cellular networks by tethering to a Blackberry smartphone.  Rather than the BlackBerry 6 operating system to power the BlackPad, RIM is said to be using a new OS developed by QNX Software Systems, which it recently acquired.

Kno Secures New Financing   no comments

A few months ago Kno, Inc., a startup based in Santa Clara, announced a rather improbable new tablet computerKno-Tablet that it plans to launch before the end of the year.

I say improbable because of the size and weight of the Kno.  In fact the specs of the Kno look quite good and this should prove to be a very capable device.  The thing is, the Kno will need to displace over five pounds of textbooks in your book bag to reach equilibrium.  This is a device that would definitely benefit from plastic-based displays.

Today Kno announced that it has secured $46 million in its latest round of financing.  Andreessen Horowitz (Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz’ VC firm) is the lead investor.

The Kno will have twin 14-inch multitouch screens, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and the support of the major textbook publishers.  The tablet will run Linux with a Webkit browser.  Each screen has its own battery, so battery life is expected to be six to eight hours.  The Kno is expected to have a Tegra 2 graphics chip from Nvidia.  With its large 14-inch screens textbook pages can be displayed full size.

If all goes well, Kno should begin accepting pre-orders in October or November and start shipping by the holiday season 2010.  Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but should be below $1000.
