Verso Kindle 3 covers

Some of the new ereader covers LightWedge had displayed at CES have now been released under the Verso label. The cool lighted cover prototype LightWedge was demonstrating has not yet been released, but hopefully it is on the way — at CES I was told that it might be available around the end of the second quarter.

The new line of Verso covers are primarily marketed for the Kindle 3, but feature a one-size-fits-all design that will also fit other ereaders including the Nook, Kobo, Galaxy Tab and the Sony Daily Reader.

When I examined the demos of these covers at CES, I was impressed by the workmanship and quality of the materials used. The Artist Series feel really nice in your hands — like holding an old leather-bound volume.

Verso New York Times Kindle 3 Covers

This is a series of three Kindle 3 covers that feature images from The New York Times photo archives. The interior is lined with a suede-like material and includes a pocket to hold papers. Elastic bands at the corners hold your ereader in place.

The three photos to choose from are the Flatiron Building, View from River House and the Statue of Liberty. Each is priced at $49.99.

Verso Artist Series Kindle 3 Covers

This is a set of leather covers embossed with designs from different artists. So far Verso has three designs, each available in two different colors. This is expected to be an ongoing series with new designs to be released in the future.

The covers in the Artist Series are also lined with a suede-like material and use elastic corner straps to secure the ereader. An inner pocket is provided to hold papers.

The three designs currently available are:

Urban Calligraphy by Sisters Gulassa; available in brown with tan interior or pink/grey.
Cities by Sharyn Sowell; available in brown/tan or red/grey.
Typewriter by Molly Rausch; available in sage/tan or pink/tan.

The Artist Series Kindle 3 covers are priced at $39.99 each. The photo below shows the three designs in order of mention.

Barnes & Noble is having a 30 percent off sale on some of their NOOK covers and frames. In all there appear to be 10 different covers to choose from. No idea how long this will last.

If you have a nook or Kindle ereader there really are a lot of covers and cases to choose from now. Besides protecting your ereader, finding the right cover is a great way to personalize your reading.

Splash Proof Kindle Case

If you are looking for water and sand resistance but don’t need a full-on water proof case for your Kindle 2 ereader then the new KlearKase is worth looking at. The KlearKase is made of polycarbonate and is splash and dust proof and also protects against bumps, scratches and drops. This case is designed to be left on your Kindle all of the time – not just when you are reading around the wet stuff.

The KlearKase is not meant to be used if you actually take your Kindle into the water; it would be great for use poolside, while the M-Edge Guardian Casewould be the appropriate choice for actually taking your ereader with you into the pool. Currently the KlearKaseis only available for the 6-inch Kindle and costs $39.99. This is half of the price of the Guardian case if you don’t need the heavy duty waterproofing the M-Edge product provides.

JAVOedge nook Covers & Cases

JAVOedge makes a lot of different cases and covers for the nook. These come in many styles, but there are a variety of floral prints on canvas or other fabric. Many of the JAVOedge ereader cases are available in either a book style or flip style and there are also sleeve style cases as shown in the picture. Prices are reasonable – mostly ranging from $20 to $40.

Moleskine Kindle Cover

The Moleskine cover is available for both the 6-inch Kindle and the Kindle DX ereaders. It is slim and elegant. The interior is lined with microsuade and four wide elastic bands are use to hold the Kindle in place. The Moleskine cover comes with a reporter-style notebook for note taking. The model for the 6-inch Kindleis $39.99 and the DX sizeis $59.99.

OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle 2 & Kindle DX Cover

This is one of my favorites – I love old leather. The OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle Caseis lined with microsuade and uses the Kindle hinge plus an elastic band at one corner to hold the ereader securely in place.

With this type of rustic leather each cover will take on its own unique appearance over time. The craftsmanship of these covers is high, and they are somewhat more expensive; $74.99 for the 6-inch Kindle size and $84.99 for the DX size.

Amazon for some reason does not have the Vintage Leather Case for the Kindle DX lately, but you can order it direct from Octovo.

M-Edge Executive Jacket for Irex DR800SG eReader

If like me you have been holding off buying a cover for your Irex DR800SG ereader until something besides the white one that Irex offers is available there is good news. M-Edge has its Executive Jacket for IREX DR800 ereaders on Amazon now, and priced at only $19.99 it looks quite good. So far Amazon only has the mocha color, but hopefully the black and purple flavors will soon join the show.

If you are looking for a shoulder bag, M-Edge also says that its Journey Kindle Bag($29.99) fits the DR800 ereaders as well as nooks and Sony ereaders.

M-Edge’s Hip Bagalso fits several different ereaders, including the DR800, nook and Sony ereaders and is priced at $34.99.

Still in the works at M-Edge is the Latitude Jacket for the DR800 which is “coming soon.”

Waterproof Kindle Covers and Cases

Guardian eReader Case by M-Edge

If you want to take a bath with your Kindle ereader, you can of course do like Jeff Bezos and use a large ziploc bag. But now ereaders in the know have something much more cool to brave the waters in.

M-Edge, which is probably the largest manufacturer of ereader covers and cases, had a new waterproof Kindle case on display at CES.

The Guardian eReader Case is made of hard transparent polycarbonate with an anti-reflective film to cut glare while reading in sunlight. Four latches keep the case tightly closed and an integrated gasket keeps the water out in depths of up to one meter. There are flexible sealed coverings over the buttons to allow full access to the keyboard and controls.

Internal buoyancy chambers keep the Guardian floating upright. If your ereader goes overboard while wearing the Guardian it will simply bob back up to the surface of the water in a ready to read position and you will still be smiling. In fact, this case is almost like a Coast Guard approved life vest for Kindle ereaders. Holy Kindle on a jet ski! Kindle ereaders can now go boating!

In the tub you could just let your Kindle float in front of you, leaving your hands free for a quick round of Battleship vs Mega Antimatter-Breath Giant Mutant Rubber Ducky from Tokyo Harbor between page turns.

The Guardian is now availablewith the back colored in red, blue or black and is priced at $79.99.

Update: M-Edge also has another water and sand resistant cover – the M-Edge Leisure Kindle Jacket, which has a clear vinyl cover and ripstop nylon back. Access to the five way controller is available through a Lycra panel. A high-density foam frame provides shock protection, and you can turn your Kindle ereader face down when transporting for better screen protection. Priced at $29.99

TrendyDigital WaterGuard Waterproof Case

For a less expensive albeit less protective solution, you could go with one of TrendyDigital’s WaterGuard Waterproofcases. These have been around for awhile, and are kind of like a high tech Ziploc bag. The controls are accessed through the flexible cover. TrendyDigital makes these cases in several sizes. There are WaterGuard Cases that will work with several ereaders, including the nook, Sony Touch or Pocket Edition and the Kindle DX.

At CES I had a chance to look at some of TrendyDigital’s leather Kindle covers as well. These are somewhat unique in that instead of using the usual hinge, Velcro or elastic corner bands to secure your ereader in the cover, TrendyDigital uses a leather pocket that is closed on all of the outer edges. There are cutouts for buttons, USB ports, etc. Besides securely holding your Kindle in place, this has the added benefit of increased shock protection, especially at the corners. These covers use magnetic closures.

TrendyDigital’s leather covers are also available for the nook and Kindle DX ereaders.

Patagonia and Belkin Covers

The Patagonia Kindle Case is a water resistant cover made of polyester and has a plastic zipper. This cover uses elastic corner bands to hold your ereader in place. There is a Patagonia case for the Kindle DX ereader as well as for the six-inch Kindle. These cases tend to get mixed reviews (3 1/2 stars/176 reviews).

The Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case is really more of a carrying bag than a cover, as you are meant to remove your Kindle for reading. It is made of neoprene and has a plastic zipper. Again, this one is water resistant, not water proof. There is a size for the Kindle DX as well. This case gets quite good reviews (4 1/2 stars/389 reviews). One of my friends and his wife both have their Kindle ereaders happily ensconced in these cases and are quite satisfied.

Lenovo eReader Rumored; Paradigm Shift – Not; Third Party nook Covers

Lenovo, which is the fourth largest computer maker on this planet, is rumored to be working on an ereader. Supposedly the new ebook reader is in internal testing and will soon be ready to hit the market.

Paradigm Shift

Electronista is reporting another new ereader, this one to be unveiled at CES by Paradigm Shift Sourcing and Manufacturing. Rather than using an e-ink display, this device will use a color LCD screen.

There will be both a 5 inch and 7 inch model. The more capable 7 incher will run Windows CE and have a touchscreen, and will be able to read MS Word documents, view YouTube videos, etc. Both models will be able to play MP3 files.

It appears that the 5 inch model, which will be $150, will support PDF, FB2, PDB and non-DRM’ed EPUB ebook formats, while the 7 inch version at $200 will add the ability to read DRM’ed ebooks (presumably ADE).

To me this looks more like an internet tablet that is being repurposed to take advantage of the hot ereader market.

Third Party nook Covers

There are already a handful of third party nook coversbecoming available. There doesn’t seem to be a really large selection at the moment, but I’m sure that will change quickly. Oberon Design should have their hand-tooled leather covers in a nook ereader friendly size ready soon as well.
