Amazon removes Kindle Store button from its iOS app, adds digital magazine support   no comments

Posted at 10:03 am in Random,Reading apps

Amazon is the latest to remove the ability to shop for ebooks from within its iPad/iPhone app rather than fork over 30 percent of any sales to Apple.  Amazon released an update for its app today that is in compliance with Apple’s new rules.

Besides removing the in-app shopping, the new Kindle iOS app now supports digital magazines and newspapers from the Kindle Store.  The Kindle newsstand at the moment features 88 magazines as compared to 157 titles at B&N’s newsstand.

Personally I prefer digital magazines from B&N or Zinioas they recreate the print magazine page for page.  Magazines at the Kindle Store are optimized for reading on the Kindle ereaders, which is understandable, but when Amazon launches a tablet I hope they will also offer tablet editions that are faithful to the paper versions.

Amazon Announces Kindle Editions with Audio/Video for iDevice Apps   no comments

Posted at 6:21 am in kindle 2,Random

Amazon has announced that the Kindle app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch now has the ability to play embedded audio and video in books.  Amazon is calling these new enhanced books Kindle Editions with Audio/Video and they have their own page.

So far there appear to be 13 titles with enhanced content at the Kindle Store, all priced at $9.99.  There was not an actual update to the Kindle app overnight, so I am thinking that the functionality was already there, perhaps added in the last update.  Probably Amazon was waiting for the content to be in place before announcing.

Kindle for iPad, iPhone Update – Kobo to Follow; New Photo App   no comments

Posted at 9:09 pm in Apple iPad,Random,Reading apps

Amazon today updated the Kindle for iPhone and iPad apps.  New in version 2.1:

  • Bigger fonts and more font sizes on iPad
  • Easier and faster navigation between home and archived items on iPad
  • Search in book – iPhone only for now
  • Download progress and percentage display

Amazon also lists some items to be added in the next release:

  • Dictionary with 250,000 entries
  • Look up words in Google and Wikipedia
  • Search in book on iPad

This seems to be something of a stop-gap release until the next one whichKindle-iPad-New-Largest-Font promises much more.  More font sizes are of course nice – and the new largest size font will be helpful for those with visual impairments.

The in-book search and the lookup trifecta when it arrives on the iPad will be welcome.  I would also like to see an auto-scrolling feature like the Wattpad reading app has.  This may sound frivolous, but it comes in handy when reading in bed or with your iPad on a stand.  The iPad is heavy,  and it is nice to be able to prop it against a pillow and have the page scroll down as you read.  I can’t believe Wattpad is the only one of the ereading apps to include this feature so far (unless I’ve missed something).

Another feature I would like:  both the Wattpad and the Barnes & Noble reading app for the iPad allow you to choose background and text color.  As I have noted before,  reading on an LCD does stress my eyes after a while.  The night mode helps a lot,  but in my case a blue font on a dark background really works well.  Sounds strange?  Well,  if you can choose your own colors you can find what works best for your eyes.

Kobo also released some sort of minor update to their reading app a few days ago,  although I have not spotted any changes – whatever improvements there are seem to be under the hood.  The blurb for the update (Version 1.0.3) says “Prepares library for upcoming Kobo iPhone & iPad update that includes amazing new features and stability improvements.”  So it looks like Kobo will be releasing a substantial update to their reading app soon as well.

This has nothing to do with ereading on the iPad,  but there is an interestingTiffen-Photo-fx-Logo looking photo editing app for the iPad from Tiffen that was announced today.  In addition to simulations of many of Tiffen’s glass photographic filters Photo fx Ultra has a lot of features:

  • Choose from 68 filters organized into 7 different filter groups
  • Select from a total of 836 presets
  • Try one of the 65 different color or black and white film looks
  • Add realistic diffusion to photos using a library of 50 interesting textures
  • Create natural lighting effects using 117 different patterns
  • Choose from 27 grain presets to simulate popular motion picture film stocks
  • Add multiple filters without saving
  • Selectively apply filters by painting a mask
  • Modify filters with sliders, on-screen controls or presets
  • High resolution support up to 2048 pixels
  • Edit in portrait or landscape mode
  • Crop, Rotate, Straighten
  • Zoom into the image with the Close-Up Lens filter
  • Compatibility with the still image editions of the Tiffen Dfx Digital Filter software
  • Quickly search for filters and presets
  • Integrated Help

I have not bought this one yet – I’m still waiting for the camera connection kit to be in stock so I can connect my camera directly to the iPad,  but this is one app I will be looking at.  Photo fx Ultra is $5.99 at the iTunes app store. icon

Kindle App for iPad Approved and in App Store   no comments

The Kindle App for the iPad went live in the App Store yesterday evening.  This is great news as the iPad’s iBookstore only contains 60,000 titles, and access to the Kindle’s 450,000 books will be a welcome addition.  From Amazon’s press release:

* Automatically Syncs with Kindle and Kindle Compatible Devices: Amazon’s Whispersync technology automatically syncs customers’ last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle for iPhone, Kindle for Mac, Kindle for iPad, and more. Customers can read on their Kindle, read some on their iPad or Mac, and always pick up where they left off.

* Beautiful User Interface: The Kindle App user interface is tailored to the large size, look, and feel of iPad. The new user interface with bold colors, animation, and seamless user experience make Kindle on iPad a unique reading experience.

* Customizable Appearance: Customers can choose to dim iPad’s screen within the app to make reading easier regardless of the ambient light or time of day. Readers can also choose from three different background colors and alter the font color and size to customize the reading experience and help ease the strain on their eyes.

* Page Turn Animation: Kindle App for iPad offers an interactive experience with page turn animation designed to replicate the look of a page turning in a book. Customers who prefer a simpler, unadorned reading experience can choose the "Basic Reading Mode" option and turn off animation.

The initial release of the Kindle App for iPad was tested only on the iPad Simulator that Apple provides, so there may yet need to be some tweaking done to the app.

Reading apps from Koboand Barnes and Noble amongst others should be available soon.
