Irex Files For Bankruptcy

Irex has filed for bankruptcy in Netherlands. Irex CEO Hans Brons blames the company’s financial straits on disappointing sales in the US due to not being able to release the DR800SG ereader in the US in time for the 2009 holiday season. Brons says that this happened because of delays in getting FCC approval of the device.

It is possible that Irex may be able to come back, but Brons says that the company is out of cash and credit is still very tight in the current global economic climate.

As an owner of a DR800SG this is sad news. I really like the display of this ereader and the 8-inch screen format. Obviously if it breaks there will probably be no repairing it. I imagine that the Verizon powered connection to Barnes & Noble will disappear as well. At least Irex got the firmware update out before this happened.

Just a few things I have not posted on yet.

1Cross Tech eReader

This is a curious new ereader that was on display at CeBit. There is an e-ink screen on the left and a small LCD screen with a keyboard on the right side. The hinged design allows the two sides to be folded back-to-back for easier one-handed use. There is a video of the 1Cross on the video page.

enTourage eDGe unLoved at Engadget

Engadget has a review of the Entourage Edge by Joanna Stern that is pretty negative. It sounds as though the Edge will need a few firmware updates. That should sound pretty familiar by now. More worrisome is that Stern also found the processor to be underpowered and a bit sluggish at times.

PocketBook Reviews at Nate’s Ebook News

Nate the Great has several video reviews of the PocketBook 360 and the Pocketbook 302 that are well worth watching. The PocketBook 360 looks like a good and very portable ereader for those on the go. I like the detachable hard screen cover.

Irex DR800SG Covers

Since I cracked the screen of my Neo, I’ve been understandably somewhat overprotective of my Irex DR800SG ereader. Until I get a cover I’m leaving it at home where it is safely ensconced in a drawer when I’m not using it. I’ve resolved to practice safe ereading from now on – so should you!

The only cover available for the Irex DR800SG so far is a white leather thingie from Irex that just doesn’t do it for me. The sleeve that came with doesn’t cut it either as it does not provide enough screen protection.

Well, not to fear – new covers for the DR800SG from M-Edge will soon be here. Besides the Executive and Latitude model jackets, M-Edge will have three shoulder bag style cases for the new Irex ereader.

The Irex DR800SG is also available now at Amazonthrough a third-party seller which might at least save you some sales tax if you are looking to buy one.

Remember Irex’s daringly named DR800SG ereader? Well it is back on the Best Buy website again. This time it is priced at $399 – apparently without the “Limited Edition” content that appeared very briefly on Best Buy’s site in October of last year for a price of $449.

Not sure when it will actually become available for purchase – right now it is listed as “coming soon”.

Irex to Begin Selling DR800S Ereader in Europe Next Week

Or at least that is what their latest press release dated yesterday says.

The 8.1-inch touch-screen device boasts a sleek design, easy to-use interface and open DRM policy – it will be available January 18 2010 in stores (amongst others Mediamarkt, FNAC and Selexyz) throughout Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK and online in the IREX Web shop (www.irexshop.com ).

The DR800S is the European version of the DR800SG ereader (which has 3G for the US market) which was supposed to be available at Best Buy stores in the US a few months ago. The US version has never shown up, and Irex has been silent for the most part about its missing ereader. The company has apparently opted to employ the time honored Ostrich Strategy, Head In The Sand (OSHITS) method for dealing with bad news when it comes to the US version of their new ereader.

The DR800S ereader will sell for $601.44 in the Irex online store.
