Silent Tears: A Journey Of Hope In A Chinese Orphanage (AmazonEncore Edition) by Kay Bratt (4 1/2 stars/161 reviews) $2.99.
Irrepressible memories. Vacant eyes. A child being dangled from a third story window. A boy tied to a chair. Children sleeping in layers of clothing to fight off the bitter cold. An infant dying from starvation. Some things your mind will never allow you to forget.
Silent Tears is the true story of the adversity and triumphs one woman faced as she fought against the Chinese bureaucracy to help that country’s orphaned children.
The Walking Man by Wright Forbucks (5 stars/2 reviews) $0.99. I read this recently; its a quirky but good story.
Loosely based on a true story, The Walking Man is a story of "persistence, self-discovery and redemption" that brings new meaning to the term "never give up." This original and wickedly humorous love story begins when a teenage boy is inexplicably paralyzed. His family tries to care for him, but tragedy ensues causing the young man to be institutionalized. At Leicester County Hospital, a facility dedicated to excellence in everything it does, our hero sheds his bitterness after "winning" a war with his surly roommate. He then finds love when a beautiful volunteer stops by to read to him. Despite their instant connection, paralysis and the "love" of a brute leads to a breakup that forces "the walking man" to devise a plan to win back the woman he loves.
Odd Jobs by Ben Lieberman (4 1/2 stars/49 reviews) $0.99. Also at Barnes Noble and Kobo.
College student Kevin Davenport is working any and every odd job to make it through school. He discovers who killed his father while working at the corrupt, mob-controlled, Kosher World Meat factory. Now he will stop at nothing to prevent the killers from ruining other families and to get his revenge, as well. Conventional techniques, such as going to the police, have not only been ineffective for others, these methods have proven to be virtual suicide.
So all bets are off and Davenport uses the grittiest and strangest methods as tools to bring down the killers. The characters, misadventures and odd jobs will have the readers laughing. But the hazard is real and Davenport is in over his head.
Yellow Crocus: A Novel by Laila Ibrahim (4 1/2 stars/54 reviews) $2.99. Historical fiction.
In 1837, Lisbeth Wainwright is born to the white mistress of a sprawling Virginia plantation. Seconds later, she is delivered into the arms of her black wet nurse, Mattie. For a field hand like Mattie, her transfer to the big house is supposed to be considered an honor—except that the move tears Mattie away from her beloved grandfather and her infant son, Samuel. But Mattie is a slave, with no say in the matter, and so she devotes herself to her master’s daughter, though she longs to be raising her own child. Growing up under Mattie’s tender care, little Lisbeth adopts the woman’s deep-seated faith in God, her love of music and black-eyed peas, and the tradition of hunting for yellow crocuses in the early days of spring.
As the years pass, Lisbeth is drawn slowly back into her white parents’ world and begins to learn the ins and outs of life for a high-born young lady. Still she retains her connection to Mattie, befriending Samuel and drifting comfortably between the two worlds. She accepts her parents’ assertion that their slaves depend upon them for guidance and protection, yet that notion becomes more and more difficult to believe as she gains awareness of the inequality of life in the big house versus the slave quarters.

Free ebooks for Kindle & other ereaders – 1/12/2012 no comments
Here are some of the better rated freebies currently at the Kindle Store and elsewhere. I have not listed these for a while — to be honest, I’m a bit pissed off with free ebooks at the moment.
I just spent a not small chunk of my precious reading time with a not very well written series. After getting sucked in by the first book, which was free, I became attached to the characters and story line, such as they were. This neatly set me up to become emotionally blackmailed into finishing the whole sorry mess. Never again. . . . At least until next time. Anyways, download these at your own risk!

Some paid reading ideas:
Tune in Tokyo: The Gaijin Diaries by Tim Anderson (4 stars/51 reviews) $1.99.
When Anderson decides his life in North Carolina is in a rut, he chooses to make a dramatic change and moves to Japan to teach English, as he chronicles in this hilarious, enlightening, and insightful memoir. Anderson is tall, white, and extremely gay—all things that distinguish him from the average person in Japan. His various adventures—accidentally stumbling into the adult area of Tokyo and learning that Japanese porn cuts out all the good parts; discovering the hard way the low standards some English academies have for their teachers; experiencing the joys of karaoke and experimental music—help Anderson begin to understand the differences between American and Japanese culture. A gifted writer, Anderson is sensitive to cultural differences, delightful in his irreverence, and astutely aware of himself and his particular perspective. His observations are often laugh-out-loud funny and will leave readers with the desire to travel and to keep turning the pages, wondering, by the end, where Anderson will travel to next.
