Barnes & Noble selling new (not refurbished) Nook Wi-Fi ereaders for $99

Barnes & Noble is selling the Nook Wi-Fi for $99 at its eBay store. These are brand new ereaders — not refurbished units. Obviously it is time to clear out the old and in with the new. There are also a few Nook covers that have been discounted at B&N’s eBay Store.

At the Barnes & Noble website all of the Kate Spade and Jack Spade covers for the Nook 3G and Nook Wi-Fi have been marked down to 75% off of list price.

Kindle book lending arrives

Amazon has enabled lending of Kindle ebooks as promised. Of course, this feature will also need to be enabled by the publisher — for many titles it isn’t, just as on the Nook ereaders.

You can see if an ebook is lendable by looking in its Product Details on its page at Amazon. If you already own a title you can also check the Your Orders section in Manage Your Kindle(click the + button to the left of the title).To initiate a Kindle book loan you will also need to go to the Manage Your Kindle page or the ebook’s product page at Amazon. You will need the borrower’s email address so that they can be notified. The recipient will have seven days to accept the loan.

Kindle books that can be loaned can only be loaned one time ever and only for 14 days. When one of your ebooks is loaned out you will not be able to access it yourself until it is returned (same as if it were a paper book). These are the same basic lending rules as on the Nook ereader.

Recipients of loaned Kindle books do not need to have a Kindle — any Kindle device app will do. Currently Kindle book lending can only be initiated by customers in the US. US customers can loan an ebook to someone outside of the US as long as it is not restricted by geographical rights.

One drawback appears to be that Kindle book loans cannot be initiated from the library of the Kindle ereader itself. With the Nook you initiate the loan from the ereader, rather than having to do it from your computer.

The Nook’s LendMe program actually has some cool features, like being able to discover ebooks that are in the libraries of your friends that you might like to borrow (discoverability can also be turned off if you don’t want your friends browsing your library). Of course, all of this is somewhat crippled by the publishers. The Kindle will probably get there too; ebook lending is one area where Amazon has not been the leader of the pack, yet.

NOOK to Hit Walmart

Walmart will soon be adding the NOOK to its ereader selection according to an announcement today from Barnes & Noble.

The ereaders Walmart currently offers are mostly available online only — not in its stores. According to the B&N press release the NOOK will be available in both Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G flavors on actual store shelves. In fact, many Walmart stores will be featuring a NOOK-branded ereading area where shoppers will even get to fondle a NOOK demo. All of this is supposed to start happening as soon as October 24.

Amazon usually offers a free 2-day shipping upgrade for its Kindle ereaderin the week or two up to a holiday. Barnes and Noble today announced that it is also offering free expedited shipping if you order a nook ereader before 10:59 AM ET on Thursday, June 17.

B&N is also currently offering a $50 gift card with the purchase of a nook. The gift card can be used for purchasing ebooks to fill up your (or your dad’s) new ereader.

Today Barnes and Noble officially unveiled their new ereader. It is very similar to the photos leaked a few days ago, but instead of the pretty cool name Athena the new ereader is called Nook.

Well, even if the name disappoints, I am glad that for the most part the photos were pretty accurate. This is a much more elegant design than another duel screened ereader shown yesterday by Spring Design.

Some of the Nook’s features:

6” E-Ink screen with 16 gray scales
5 font sizes
2 GB internal storage + Micro SD card slot
Wireless connection by AT&T; Wi-Fi
Supports note taking and highlighting
Built-in dictionary
Size: 7.7” x 4.9” x 0.5”; weighs just over 11 ounces
Supported Formats: EPUB, eReader, PDF, MP3, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP
Use your own photos for screen saver

The 3.5 inch LCD touchscreen below the E-Ink screen is used for navigation and for selecting books to purchase. Books in your library are shown by their covers on the LCD screen.

If you have B & N’s eReader software installed on your iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry, PC or Mac your purchased books and your place in them will be synced across devices. Notes and annotations are also synchronized. You will also be able to lend most ebooks to friends for up to 14 days. An ebook can only be lent once apparently, and can only be on any one device at a time. This also works across other compatible platforms such as iPhone as long as your friend’s device has eReader installed.

The Nook comes with a micro USB cable, AC adapter and quick start guide. You will need to purchase a cover separately. Barnes and Noble has priced their new ereader at $259, and it should be available end of November. They are taking pre-orders now.

Of course we will have to wait to actually play with this new ereader, but it does seem to have some appealing features. The dual screen approach is a clever method of having the convenience of a touchscreen without its glare problems. Being able to lend books is really great and hopefully this will become a standard feature on ereaders in the future. The Kindle store has more ebook titles (not counting public domain) than Barnes and Noble, but the Nook definitely looks like a much more compelling choice than Sony’s ereaders.
