Asustek 8-inch LCD eReader   no comments

Digitimes is reporting that Asus plans to launch an ereader this fall with an 8-inch non-backlit LCD display with 64 grayscales.  The price mentioned is an unlikely $599.

Asus has previously announced plans to launch both ereaders and tablets.  Obviously a $599 price tag is way out of line in today’s market, so they will have to do better than that.

Asus Eee Tablet   no comments

One of the more interesting ereading devices at Computex in Taipei appears to be the Eee Tablet from Asus.  The Eee Tablet uses a 2450 dpi reflectiveAsus-Eee-Tablet (not backlit) LCD screen with a Wacom pen-based touchscreen.  The device appears to excel for handwritten note taking and sketching.  From Asus:

Users can use one of the built-in notepad templates and have the option to store, sort, tag, organize and browse through them. Real time text annotations can also be made on-the-fly. The Eee Tablet makes reading easy, with text file page turns taking just 0.1 seconds—nine times faster than the page turns of normal e-readers. It remains easy on the users’ eyes even after prolonged periods of reading.

You can also write notes on photos taken with the built-in 2 megapixel camera.  There is a Micro SD card slot and Asus claims a 10 hour battery life.  The price is said to be $299 and the Eee Tablet should be available in September.

The Eee Tablet does look a little hefty, and Engadget says that it weighs about the same as an iPad.  The video is from Gearlog.

Another Asus eReader Revealed   no comments

Posted at 9:29 am in Other eReaders,Random

Devicemag is reporting that details of another Asus ereader have beenAsus-DR-950-eReader revealed.  This one is the DR-950 and will feature a 9-inch black and white Sipix touchscreen rather than a color screen like the ereader announced yesterday.

The DR-950’s screen will have a resolution of 1024 x 768, and will display 16 gray scales. There will also be a web browser and text to speech for multiple languages.  WiFi and 3G are also included in the new ereader.

Supported formats include PDF, TXT and ePub; no word yet on which
DRM’ed formats might be supported,  but I would expect Adobe Digital Editions to be added.

Asus has been intimating for some time that they would be entering the ereader market.  Previously the concepts that they have shown have been more akin to netbooks than ereaders,  but the DR-950 does look like a serious contender.

Asus DR750 eReader   no comments

The Times Online has the scoop on the Asus DR750 ereader which uses a 6-inch OLED screen.  The DR750 is said to get 122 hours per battery charge,  even when playing flash videos.Asus-DR750-eReader   Wi-Fi and 3G will be included in the device.

Not sure how well this device will actually perform as an ereader as it will probably have the “looking into a flashlight” effect.  This may not be as important for reading magazines, etc., but for reading ebooks over longer periods of time the OLED screen will probably not be as comfortable for your eyes as e-Ink or another non-backlit solution.

No word on any pricing yet,  but the DR750 may be out by the end of 2010.

UPDATE: I’ve seen this ereader called both the DR750 and DR570 on the net – not sure which is correct yet.
