The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Barnes & Noble will no longer sell any books published by Amazon’s publishing imprints in its stores.  B&N is irate about Amazon’s growing list of exclusive ebook publishing deals.

To be sure there are a few books that are available in digital format from B&N but not from Amazon, but these are few and far between and the number of exclusives at the Kindle Store vastly outweighs those available at the Nook Store.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s stock price is taking a hit today after the company reported lower than expected revenue for the last quarter, although the company’s profit was higher than expected.

I subscribe to Audible.com, which offers over 100,000 titles and costs $14.95 per month for one credit (most of the audiobooks cost one credit).  With Audible you own the audiobooks you purchase with your credits (you can also purchase additional titles and Audible has frequent sales).  Your library at Audible will remain accessible to you even if you cancel your membership.  Audible’s titles are downloaded to an authorized device and can be played on that device anywhere, anytime.

For me Audible works best as I listen to audiobooks while I’m driving, but if one listens from a device that always has an Internet connection and especially if one goes through multiple audiobooks per month, Audiobooks.com’s cloud-based service might be worth looking at.

According to Pew’s research, college grads aged between 30 to 49 years old and earning $75,000 or more have the highest ownership rates.  For tablets, Pew found no difference in ownership rates between men and women, while a higher percentage of women (21% vs 16%) owned ereaders.

Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt have started making iPad versions of their high school textbooks available through the new educational section of the iBookstore.

iBooks 2 is free at iTunes and iBooks Author is free at the Mac App Store.

Yesterday I was discussing the Kindle Fire with a friend who had one.  In my case, even before the last update, I never really saw many instances of the touchscreen being unresponsive except occasionally when trying to open a link on a web page.  At the time I was having intermittent problems with my Internet connection and thought at least part of the problem was being caused by that.

My friend’s Fire, on the other hand, had severe problems.  Even when reading ebooks the screen would become totally unresponsive and would not even turn the pages.  He returned his unit before software version 6.2.1 came out, which might have alleviated the problem.  He and his wife did like the Fire when it was working though, and will probably buy another unit and try again.  Both he and his wife have been long time Kindlers and have Kindle 2 ereaders. 

Usually I seem to be the one who draws the short straw and gets the defective bit of kit.  At restaurants I’m always the one who orders the one thing that is out of stock, much to the ongoing amusement of my family.  Happily this was not the case with my Kindle Fire.
