Cole Haan Kindle 3 Covers   no comments

Posted at 10:35 am in Kindle 3,Kindle Skins & Covers,Random

Since the Kindle 3 is smaller than the Kindle 2, covers made for the older model will not fit the new one.  It takes time for the various cover and case makers to fit the Kindle 3 and get their covers and jackets into production.

Cole Haan is one of the first manufacturers to have its covers for the Kindle 3 ereader available for pre-order.  Cole Haan makes very high quality leather goods and this is reflected in the price.

At the moment Amazon is running a Back to School promotion that includes the Cole Haan Kindle 3 covers – this will give you a $20 discount if your order of eligible goods is $80 or more.   This promotion is for a limited time only – I did not see an end date, but I would imagine that it will finish at the end of this month or the first week of September.

There are currently several styles and colors of Cole Haan Kindle 3 covers, but before you order make sure that your choice is indeed for the latest generation Kindle 3, as some 2nd generation Kindle covers have made their way into the search results as well.

Kindle 3 Skins   no comments

DecalGirl appears to be the first to have Kindle 3 skinsready.  Initially DecalGirl has around 250 different Kindle 3 skin designs for you to choose from.  The new skins are priced at $14.99 or $17.99 if you upgrade to the matte finish.  I recommend the matte – I have used both finishes and the matte is the nicest in my opinion; the matte finish seems to look even better after it ages for a while.  You can use the discount coupon code DECAL10 to get a 10 percent discount on your order.

Cole Haan Kindle 2 Covers on Sale   no comments

Amazon is again selling several different styles of Cole Haan Kindle 2 coversat discounted prices.  The woven leather cover in red or bronze is $59.99 (regularly $119.99), and smooth leather covers start at $36.23.

I imagine that as manufacturers try to get rid of their stock of covers and cases for the Kindle 2 we will be seeing more discounted prices.

I’m guessing that we probably won’t see any Kindle 3 covers other than the official covers from Amazon for a month or two after the new Kindle is released.  I imagine that the cover manufacturers, like us, have to wait until it ships to get their hands on the new model so that they can fit it.  The same will apply to skins for the Kindle 3.

The Amazon covers for the Kindle 3 actually do look pretty nice.  I especially like the way that the integrated light draws power from the Kindle battery.  Having one less thing to replace the batteries of will be more convenient, especially when traveling.

OCTOVO Vintage Leather Kindle DX Cover Review   no comments

OCTOVO makes designer quality leather coversas well as lower priced faux leather sleeves for the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX ereaders.

OCTOVO-Vintage-Leather-Kindle DX-Cover-open

I bought the Vintage Leather cover from OCTOVO for my Kindle DX and have had it for almost a week now.  This is a quality Kindle jacket and I’m quite happy with it.

OCTOVO-Vintage-Leather-DX-Cover-Open-Back

My cover is a bit darker than the photos at Amazon or OCTOVO would indicate, but each one of these covers will be somewhat unique and will also age uniquely.

OCTO-Logo

The craftsmanship seems quite good.  The color of the stitching complements the color of the leather and is very precise and neat.  The interior is lined with black microfiber that seems to be of a much higherOCTOVO-Vintage-Leather-Kindle-DX-Cover-front quality than that on other covers that I’ve seen.

The front cover does not have a stiffener, but the leather is quite thick and stiff enough that I’m satisfied that it will adequately protect the screen of my ereader.  This cover utilizes the Kindle hinge system.  To secure the DX to the back panel of the cover there is an elastic band on the lower right corner.

The front folds back flat and none of the controls or ports are covered.

Besides looking really good, the Vintage Leather cover feels really nice in your Kindle-hinge hands – it is quite book-like.

Not everyone is a fan of the rustic vintage leather style, but if you are I think you will be happy with this.  If Indiana Jones had a Kindle, this would be his official Kindle cover.

OCTOVO makes the Vintage Leather cover in sizes to fit the Kindle 2 ($74.99) and the Kindle DX ($85.00).  For some reason Amazon only carries the Kindle 2 cover.  You can order the DX cover directly from OCTOVO iconwhich is what I did.

For the Kindle 2 cover I would recommend purchasing this cover from Amazon, as at the moment you will get a free Solis reading light with it.

Free Solis Light with Selected OCTOVO Kindle 2 Jackets   no comments

Posted at 1:50 pm in Kindle Skins & Covers,Random

OCTOVO is offering a free Solis reading light OCTOVO-Solis-Kindle-Light with the purchase of select OCTOVO Kindle 2 ereader covers.  This includes OCTOVO’s Vintage Leather cover,  the Weave Kindle cover and the Quilted cover

This offer appears to be only at Amazon – not at the OCTOVO site. icon

OCTOVO also makes a leather and canvas messenger bag in Kindle 2 size that is only $39 and says that it comes OCTOVO-Quilted-Kindle-Cover with some sort of bonus case.  This looks like a very good bag for the money – if you are looking for this style.

I’ve ordered one of the Vintage Leather Covers for myself.  It was supposed to be here yesterday – thanks UPS!  I will tell you what I think once I get it.

Covers for the New Kindle 3 eReaders   no comments

The new Kindle 3 ereader is smaller than the older generation, and so manufacturers will need to make a whole new line of cases and covers to fit it.  The exception will be bag style cases, some of which may still fit – albeit a bit loosely.

M-Edge announced today that it will have more than M-Edge-Method-Portfolio-for-iPad 20 jackets, cases, stands and lights available for the Kindle 3 soon.  M-Edge will also be introducing a few new styles of covers in a size to fit the Kindle 3.

The new designs include the Method Leather Portfolio, which is already available for the iPad; the Safari Jacket, made of Leopard-printed calf hair; and the Cambridge Jacket, a wool and leather jacket.  The latter two don’t seem to have been released yet in any size.

There are, of course, the official Kindle 3 covers that will be available at the end of this month.   There will be both a lighted ($59.99) and unlighted ($34.99) version available in a variety of colors.

The new Kindle 3 (or “Latest Generation” in Amazon’s confusing naming convention scheme) is apparently selling very well, thank you; I would expect to see a lot of new covers and cases available for it very quickly.

Kindle 3 Announced   2 comments

Apparently the 6-inch Kindle being out of stock Amazon-Kindle-3-eReader for the last few days was in preparation for the introduction of a new Kindle, which Amazon has just announced.   The new version is a  “21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter design, with 50 percent better contrast, 20 percent faster page turns, up to one month of battery life, double the storage, and more–only $189, and still with free 3G wireless.”  Wi-Fi is also built in, and there will additionally be a Wi-Fi only Kindle for a lower price of $139, which is $10 lower than the price of the Wi-Fi only nook ereader.

The smaller size is achieved by slimming down the bezel and rearranging the buttons.  The page turning buttons are thinner as well.

 Kindle-2-vs-Kindle-3

As expected, the new 6-inch Kindle will make use of the new Pearl e-ink display, just like the new DX graphite.  As for the faster speed, it apparently  does not come from the faster processors we’ve been hearing about over the last six months or so, but sounds more like it is the result of fine tuning and optimization:

Kindle’s all-new, high-contrast electronic ink display is further optimized with Amazon’s proprietary waveform and font technology to make pages turn faster and fonts sharper. Waveform is a series of electronic pulses that move black and white electronic ink particles to achieve a final gray level for an image or text. Amazon tuned the new Kindle’s waveform and controller mechanism to make page turning 20 percent faster. In addition, this waveform tuning combined with new hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting make words and letters more crisp, clear, and natural-looking. Font hints are instructions, written as code, that control points on a font character’s line and improve legibility at small font sizes where few pixels are available. Hinting is a mix of aesthetic judgments and complicated technical strategies. Amazon designed its proprietary font-hinting to optimize specifically for the special characteristics of electronic ink.

Kindle-3-eReader Some other feature upgrades:

  • More built-in storage: new model will store up to 3,500 books.
  • Quieter page turning buttons.  The older model makes a small clicking sound when you flip pages.
  • New Web browser: The new Kindle uses a WebKit-based browser, which is faster and easier to navigate.  The new browser also has an “article mode” feature, which condenses Web pages into the main textual content for easier reading.
  • Better Accessibility: New Text-to-Speech (TTS) enabled menus enable navigation of menus without having to read menu options.  All menu options, content listings on the home screen and item descriptions are TTS enabled.

The new Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi comes in both graphite or white, while the Wi-Fi only model is available in graphite only.  I do like the graphite color better than the white myself – it adds to the perceived contrast.  The Wi-Fi only model also weighs slightly less – 8.5 ounces vs 8.7 ounces for the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi (and 10.2 ounces for the older model).

The new lighted leather cover for Kindle-3-Lighted-Leather-Coverthe Kindle 3 sounds kind of neato.  It has a built-in retractable light that draws power from the Kindle’s battery via gold plated conductive hinges that also hold the Kindle 3 securely in the cover.  The new lighted coverruns $59.99 and will be available in seven different colors.

Well, there is nothing really groundbreaking with this release, but the improvements are somewhat more substantive than the Kindle DX graphite’s improvements over its previous model.  I really wish we could have gotten more durable plastic-based displays but, after the iPad’s release, pricing has become the primary focus.  I’m hoping that the color Kindles, when they arrive, will have flexible screens.

The newest members of the Kindle family of ereaders will be shipping on August 27, 2010.  Amazon is taking pre-ordersnow, and is offering free two-day shipping.  The new Kindle cover will be shipping at the same time.

UPDATE: Amazon has put up a copy of the Kindle 3 User Guide – I’ve posted a link to it on my User Guides and Manuals page.

iPad Accessories – DecalGirl Matte Skin Review   no comments

The aluminum back of the iPad is quite attractive, but I have applied a DecalGirl skin to mine anyway for several reasons:

  • DecalGirl’s skins look cool.  Also provides some scratch protection. iPad-DecalGirl-Skin
  • The aluminum back of the iPad is a bit slippery – I can imagine dropping it at some point – I would like a surface with a bit more traction without bulking up the thin profile of the iPad.
  • The aluminum back is cold and somewhat uncomfortable in cold weather.
  • I wanted to try the new matte finish that DecalGirl offers now.

Installing the skin on the back of the iPad is pretty straightforward as there are no buttons or other features to work around.  I opted not to install the other part of the skin on the front of my iPad as I like the black bezel.  If you are installing a skin on an ereader or other device with buttons and other controls DecalGirl recommends popping the skin in the freezer for a few minutes first.  This makes the adhesive a little less tacky and makes it easier to shift the skin around if you need to adjust the fit.

The matte finished skins definitely do look better than the glossy finish in my opinion.   My iPad also feels better in my hands after skinning it – there is a kind of micro texture to the matte finish.  Somewhat counter intuitively the glossy skins seem a bit less slippery, especially if your fingers are a little sweaty.

The matte finish is a $5.00 upgrade, but you can use promo code GOMATTE during the checkout process to upgrade to the matte finish for free.  DecalGirl currently has about 150 different iPad Skinsas well as skins for the nook, Kindle, Bookeen Cybook and Sony ereaders.
