Parental controls for Kindle Fire   no comments

A common concern of parents with young children who share their tablets and other devices with young children is that the kids will find their way onto porn sites or come across someone’s latest wardrobe malfunction or other objectionable material while browsing the Internet.  This is especially a concern with the Kindle Fire as the Silk browser does not include parental controls and the few apps available at the Appstore that would add safe browsing are not installable on the Kindle Fire.

Mobicip offers an Internet filtering and parental control service for many mobile devices and has just announced that its Safe Browser app is now available for the Kindle Fire.  The Safe Browser app can be downloaded with a free trial from Mobicip.com.  After the free trial period there is a monthly charge.  MobiCip’s Safe Browser is also available for the iPad and iPhone at iTunes.

There are other web filtering apps available at the Amazon Appstore that provide the same service (like Safe Browser by CloudACL or My Mobile Watch Dog by Eagency) and can be installed on your other Android devices, but which are not allowed to be installed on the Fire.  One exception is WebNanny, which can be installed on the Fire but reportedly does not do a very good job of blocking porn.

One app that is available at the Appstore and can be installed to the Fire is Kids Place – With Child Lock by Kiddoware.  This app does not provide a safe browsing feature, but it does allow parents to only allow apps they authorize to be launched on a device it is installed on.

The latest software update for the Kindle Fire also allows for setting a password that must be entered before the device can be accessed.  A password can also be set for use of the Wi-Fi connection.  For instructions on how to set this up see the Kindle Fire support pages
