Amazon clarifies Kindle Touch 3G web browser functionality   no comments

On the Kindle Forums users have been wondering about the somewhat ambiguous language used in the description of the experimental web browser on the product information pagefor the Kindle Touch 3G:

Kindle Touch 3G’s experimental web browser is based on WebKit. It’s easy to find the information you’re looking for right from your Kindle Touch 3G. Experimental web browsing is available via Wi-Fi.

Does this mean that the browser can only be used only over a Wi-Fi connection and not over the free 3G connection?  Yes, apparently so.  The Amazon Kindle Team posted this clarification on the forum:

We apologize for the confusion. Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia – all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing (outside of Wikipedia) on Kindle Touch 3G is only available over Wi-Fi.
Our Kindle Keyboard 3G will continue to offer experimental web browsing over 3G or Wi-Fi.

Personally, I don’t use the browsers on my e-ink devices very often; but in a pinch it can be very handy.  This will no doubt affect different users depending on their needs and should be taken into consideration when choosing between the Wi-Fi only and the 3G + Wi-Fi versions of the Kindle Touch.  Kindle 3 users will continue to be able to use the browser over the 3G connection and if that functionality is important to you the Kindle 3 (aka Kindle Keyboard) might be a better alternative.
