Seagate launches Wi-Fi external hard drive for iOS and Android mobile devices no comments
Today Seagate announced a new battery-powered external hard drive that connects to your mobile device via Wi-Fi.
The 500 GB GoFlex Satellite can be used for adding storage capacity to an iPad or Android tablet or just about any other mobile device that features Wi-Fi connectivity and a web browser.
Seagate has a free app, GoFlex Media, at iTunes that will let you stream HD movies and other media to your iPad or iPhone from the drive. Using this app, Seagate claims that the GoFlex Satellite is capable of streaming three different movies to three different iPads simultaneously. Other devices can use a web browser for streaming videos and music or accessing documents stored on the portable drive. Seagate does have an app at the Android Market for its GoFlex file sharing system, so I would expect an Android version of the GoFlex Media app might be forthcoming before long.
Update 8/1/2011: Seagate today announced the release of a free Android version of the GoFlex Media app. It is available at the Android Market.
The GoFlex Satellite can automatically sync media and documents from a PC or Mac via a USB 3.0 or 2.0 connection
(FireWire 800 and eSATA are also supported).
Battery life is up to 5 hours of use or up to 25 hours standby. The drive comes with both a wall charger and a car charger. The GoFlex drive is already available for pre-order for $199.99 and is expected to ship within three to five weeks.
