I have been away for a few days at CES – I thought I would come back and find stacks of new freebies, but other than a large number from Kaplan Publishing there are only a few:

The Healer’s Apprentice by Melanie Dickerson (4 stars/59 reviews) Children’s from a faith-based publisher. Also free at Barnes & Noble.

When the Devil Whistles by Rick Acker (4 stars/18 reviews) Legal thriller.

Always the Baker, Never the Bride by Sandra D. Bricker (4 1/2 stars/15 reviews) Contemporary fiction.  Also free at Barnes & Noble.

Necromancer: A Novella by Lish McBride (no ratings) Short story, fantasy.

There are 131 free ebooks from Kaplan Publishing. These will be free at the Kindle Store for a limited time.  Many of these are study guides and educational titles.  As I wrote in a prior post, these titles are also available free for the Sony ereaders and iDevices for a couple more days.  You will also now find these titles free at Barnes & Noble.

A few ereading suggestions:

Perfect on Paper: The (Mis)Adventures of Waverly Bryson by Maria Murnane (4 1/2 stars/180 reviews) $3.99.

A humorous tale of affection, rejection and the search for perfection.  The author says, “I wrote this book for any woman who has ever had a really bad date or realized halfway through the work day that her skirt is on backwards.”

Switched by (Trylle Trilogy, #1) Amanda Hocking (4 1/2 stars/98 reviews). Switched-by-Amanda-Hocking-ebook This is a YA fantasy.  $0.99.  The second book in the series Torn (4 1/2 stars/49 reviews) is $2.99.  Ms Hocking has several books doing well in the Kindle bestsellers list.

When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn’t until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right.
With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed – a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy’s not sure she wants to be a part of it.

Junie B., First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! (P.S. So Does May.) by Barbara Park (5 stars/40 reviews) $0.95.  Children’s fiction.

Maids of Misfortune: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery by M. Louisa Locke (4 1/2 stars/11 reviews) $2.99.  Historical mystery.

It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.

Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.

Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn’t leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.

Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.
