HP is another company that is working on color reflective displays.  Technology Review has an article on their efforts.  HP’s approach is to develop luminescent materials to solve the dimness problems inherent in non-backlit color displays.  It sounds as though HP is still in the early stages of development and their color epaper technology likely won’t be hitting the market anytime soon.

The light loss issue is why E Ink’s new Pearl display (used in the new Kindle DX Graphite) came about.  E Ink’s approach to color electrophoretic displays is to place a color filter over a monochrome e-ink display which dims the display down.  This is why a display with much better contrast was necessary.
