Pandigital Novel Bounces   2 comments

The Pandigital Novel ereader hit the shelves at both JC Penney and Kohl’s a few days ago,  but Kohl’s website no longer lists the device.  There has  been speculation that Pandigital has recalled their new color LCD ereader.  I ordered one myself from Kohl’s this past weekend,  and as far as I know it is still on its way.

I sent an email to Pandigital’s CS and just got a reply from them.  It appears that the Novel ereader was not recalled, but rather pulled from the shelves at Kohl’s so that the units could be upgraded with the latest firmware.  The email says that the Novel should be available again in a few days.  Perhaps JC Penney does not actually stock the ereaders themselves so in their case the web page remains in place.

If you want to buy one of these I would wait for Kohl’s to have it in stock again.  JC Penney was $50 more expensive although they have now lowered their price to $199.99 – same as Kohl’s;  but their shipping rates are outrageous – $27.50.

Update: I should have added that the email was not clear as to whether I BookArmor-Delta6-High-Impact-Travel-Case-for-Pandigital-Novel-eReader would be able to do the firmware update myself or if I would have to return the Novel.  They just gave me a CS number to call when I receive the ereader.  We shall see.

Also, I see that there is already a case for the Pandigital Novel. Made by Delta it is priced at $32.95 and has layers of plastic and steel (!) for protection.

Update: There are a couple more cases now for the Novel.  See my post on the Velocity Micro Cruz Reader.  The Cruz is based on the same hardware and the same covers will fit both.

  1. To many have attended a funeral for this thing without any body present. I have the Pandigital Novel (PDN) white. I managed to get one shipped before the recall. They had a firmware update before it even released, and this one fixed a fair number of the problems, though not all. Then they did another firmware release which made a mess of things. Use the 05 version. Even with the wonky firmware, it’s a highly respectable device, and they’re still adding to it. As an ereader, its intended purpose, it’s much better than anything else out. It needs some work as a media player. The web browser isn’t fast, but it grows on you. The ability to upgrade with micro sd and sd cards is key. For the price, there just literally isn’t anything out that compares. Its build quality obliterates the eken and apad, and its price is a fifth of the Ipad.

  2. I agree that the Novel has potential, if Pandigital gets the bugs worked out. I talked with Pandigital cs today and they say they are expecting another update at any time.
