Author J. A. Konrath has written numerous novelsand hundreds of short stories. There are millions of copies of his fictional work in print in over a dozen countries. Konrath is the author of the bestselling Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels series, and has also written several books using the pen name Jack Kilborn.
Konrath is known for his continuous self-promotional work. He has written 7000 letters to libraries across the US and tirelessly toured bookstores around the country for book signings and speaking engagements. He believes that this type of marketing is necessary for writers.
In his blog, A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing, Konrath writes of his success using the Kindle Store to publish his early books that were unwanted by the traditional publishing industry. Before finally landing his first publishing contract, Konrath wrote over a million words across ten novels that gathered over 500 rejections . Most writers would have given up rather than keep going through the twelve years of hard work and rejection Konrath endured before gaining his first publishing deal.
Amazon recently announced that the seventh book in the Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels series will be published by its AmazonEncore imprint, with the digital version making an appearance in the Kindle Store this coming October, followed by the pbook in February, 2011.
Konrath writes, “I’ve gone from desperately wanting to be accepted by NY Publishing, to completely ignoring NY Publishing.” And regarding digital publishing, “I can reach readers directly. No more gatekeepers. No more middlemen. No more decision by committee. No more people telling me what I can and can’t do. No more boundaries. No more restrictions.
For writers, this is liberation. We can make more money selling far fewer books. And we don’t have anyone holding us back.”
